What is Upper Lip lift?

A single surgical procedure that can rejuvenate the midface completely and give a much younger feel to the lip region is often overlooked by most men and women. A surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and the top of the lip, known as the 'philtrum' is called lip lift. Lip lift increases the amount of red lip tissue that's visible which makes the lips look fuller and more defined. It also improves the resting position of the upper lip.

A youthful lip does not depend on the lip itself but also the characteristic features of the surrounding skin. A youthful lip has a projected arched cupid bow, much visible and voluminous red tissue, a short distance between the lip and the nose, and upward directed corners. These characteristics give the lip a dynamic, vibrant, and happier look. The upper lip and its surrounding skin tend to stretch and lengthen with increasing age and the Cupid bow loses its arch and tends to flatten. As a result, the lips lose their volume, and become thin and sag. The red lip tissue rolls inward with increasing age and sagging and covers the upper teeth which can make the mouth appear older. The corner of the lips also turns downward with age giving the face a sad look.

Lip lift surgery is a good permanent alternative to temporary lip fillers.

Though lip augmentation can increase the volume of the lip but cannot rejuvenate the lip until all the above-mentioned characteristics are reversed. By shortening the distance between the nose and lip, these changes can be reversed and the midface gets a lifted rejuvenated appearance. With upper lip lift strategic skin excision, the Cupid bow regains its arch and gives the lip a fuller look by increasing the visible red lip tissue. It increases the height of the upper lip and gives a visible pout.

A lip lift can also be done for the younger population who want their lips to be thicker and fuller.

Upper Lip Lift/Corner Lift is very commonly combined with lip augmentation procedure. It can also be combined with a surgical rejuvenation of the aging face.

A corner lip lift is also a very common procedure done for aging faces for all men and women in their 30s and 40s who have downward turned corners as a result of aging and gravity. It gives their lips and faces a much happier and more positive look.

Lip lift surgery procedure

Most lip lift surgeries are completed within 30-60 minutes using only local anesthesia. In the first step, skin markings are made on your upper lip based on the surgical plan you design with Dr. Amit Agarwal.

In the next step, local anesthesia is injected into that area to numb it. Dr. Amit Agarwal usually makes an incision in the shape of a bullhorn that's typically hidden along the base of the nose where it's less visible. It is the most commonly done type of lip lift and all the regions- center, right, and left of the lip are pulled up toward the nose. In a few cases, instead of strictly removing excess skin beneath the nose, the modified bullhorn incision is carried deeper inside the nose's mucosa. Scar traveling into the nose means that it does not require the continuous incision of a bullhorn upper lip lift. An Italian lip lift is done where the lip length is not in much excess and is usually done for people who do not want visible scars. It requires lifting through two crescent-shaped incisions below each nostril only.

Next, the necessary portion of skin just beneath the nose is gently removed and the upper lip is lifted and deeply anchored to the nasal region. The incision is then closed with non-absorbable sutures.

Corner Lip Lift

A corner lip lift "grin lift" is done for men and women who have downturned corners of the lips. It gives the face a more smiley appearance. It is done by making two small incisions at both corners of the mouth and removing a small amount of skin.

Recovery after the surgery

You will be able to walk immediately post-surgery. After the surgery, there would be no dressing or bandage. You will be discharged on the same day from the center. After the surgery, you will likely still be feeling some effects of the anesthesia for a few hours.

  • Most people experience mild pain and swelling which will subside with the medications.
  • Head end elevation would be required for the next few days to decrease the swelling
  • Be on soft diet that do not require a lot of chewing, and avoid hot liquids for 48-72 hours after surgery
  • Be careful to not open your mouth too wide to keep your sutures intact
  • Carefully brush your teeth with a small tooth brush designed for a child
  • Most patients heal from lip lift surgery in 2-3 weeks.
  • Dr Amit Agarwal may prescribe an anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, or analgesic medication to help you experience less swelling, infection, or pain.
  • You should preferably take a full week off work.
  • During recovery, it is recommended to apply ice fomentation to your lips.
  • You'll need to stay well-hydrated and keep a natural lip moisturizer on hand while healing.
