Add volume or lift the cheeks which have lost their volume or have sagged with age.
Cheek augmentation is a surgical process commonly done to add volume or lift the cheeks which have lost their volume or have sagged with age. This procedure restores their youthful appearance. Few men and women are dissatisfied with the natural bone structure of the cheek region and want to enhance their cheeks to create a more angular and sharper look.
A youthful face has cheeks that are full and high with a well-defined jawline. This is also called the triangle of youth with the base of the triangle at the cheeks and the tip of the triangle pointed towards the chin. With age, we start to experience facial bone loss and sagging of skin making our face more oblong, cheeks flatten, and jowls prominent giving an appearance of the inverted triangle or aging triangle.
Cheek Augmentation can be done mainly with two surgical techniques, hence there are 2 options for enhancing the cheeks.
CHEEK IMPLANTS and the other is by using the patient's own FAT to augment the cheek area. Fillers can also be used to augment the cheek. It is a non-surgical way in which fillers are injected to enhance the cheeks but is temporary and would need repeated sessions.
Cheek enhancement is best achieved with fat grafting in the most natural way. Though cheek implants are also used for augmentation, Dr. Amit Agarwal's first choice is always fat grafting for cheeks. Cheek implants are typically recommended for and chosen by younger patients in their 20s who want to find a single-shot permanent solution to fix the bone structures within their cheeks. Fat grafting is usually done for typical signs of aging around the midface in older patients in their 30s and early 40s who have prominent volume loss in cheeks that makes their cheeks look sunken in. The success of fat grafting depends on the percentage of fat retained on the cheeks which are usually between 60- 70 percent which is considered to be a good result. The fat not reabsorbed by the body stays on the cheeks forever unless there are severe weight fluctuations and aging over a long period of time. Fat grafting might require two sessions for optimum result and projection.
Cheek augmentation can be done as a single procedure or easily be combined with other facial cosmetic procedures such as brow lift, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, chin surgery, and facelifts. Cheek enhancement with fat grafting is quite commonly combined with a facelift, or blepharoplasty in surgery for the aging face.
Cheek enhancement by either of the methods (implants or fat) can be done in all age groups interchangeably but cheek implants are typically recommended for and chosen by younger patients in their 20s and fat grafting by middle-aged and older patients. Enhancement is best achieved with fat grafting in the most natural way. Though cheek implants are also used for augmentation, Dr. Amit Agarwal's first choice is always fat grafting for cheeks.
Two types of CHEEK IMPLANTS are more commonly used –
Submalar implants are placed just beneath the lower eye line at the very point where the cheekbone begins. So, it can be done for a younger group with deficient cheekbones to older people fighting signs of aging. Malar Implants are placed just lateral to the submalar area, prominently on the cheekbone. They are more commonly done for younger patients in their 20s and 30s to give their cheekbones a more defined, angular look. Both submalar and malar implants can be done together in a patient who has a more deficient bone in the cheek area and requires more augmentation.
Generally, surgery with cheek implants is performed under Local Anaesthesia but can be opted to be done under General Anaesthesia if you are not comfortable with Local Anaesthesia. An incision is made in the second step of the surgery. Usually, these incisions are made inside of your mouth so that no scars are on the skin. After deeper dissection, cheek implants are fixed to the desired location, and incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.
FAT GRAFTING to the cheeks can also be done under local anesthesia. But you can opt between general anesthesia or local anesthesia. The best choice will be recommended and discussed with you by Dr. Amit Agarwal. Very small incisions (3-4mm) along the pre-marked line are made during a consultation with Dr. Amit Agarwal on parts with excess fat. Then tumescent anesthesia solution is infused in the fat tissues under the skin of the area to be liposuctioned to reduce bleeding, pain, and trauma to the tissues. Then a hollow small cannula inserted through the incision is moved with restricted to and fro motion to loosen the excess fat. This fat is suctioned out of the body. Once the fat is extracted, it will then be purified to make it effective for injection. Fat is then transferred to the cheek region by very small needle punctures. Slight overfilling is done as some of the fat will be reabsorbed into your body. This also means that it may take up to two sessions to get the final desired results you want. Once the procedure is finished, you'll be able to return home. The success of fat grafting depends on the percentage of fat retained on the cheeks which are usually between 60- 70 percent which is considered to be a good result. The fat not reabsorbed by the body stays on the cheeks forever unless there are severe weight fluctuations and aging over a long period.
You will be able to walk a few hours post-surgery or the very following day, depending on the procedure and your will and wish. After the surgery, there would be no dressing or bandage. Head end elevation would be required for the next few days to decrease the swelling. You can be discharged on the same day or the next day after surgery.
The total benefits of cheek augmentation will be seen after the swelling and bruising subsides. You should always follow a healthy lifestyle to maintain your profile and confidence
Like every surgery, Cheek Augmentation also involves some risks and complications which include:
