Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow means pain at the outer aspect of the bone of the elbow joint which interferes with working and during day-to-day activities. Tennis elbow is an injury due to overuse of the elbow joint in a particular motion which leads to overloading of the tendons attached to the bone. Subsequently, the issues become inflamed and tear.

Anyone can develop this painful condition, medically known as lateral epicondylitis.

It's most common in people ages 30 to 50 and affects both men and women. Tennis elbow typically affects the dominant working hand.

Men and women who regularly performs repetitive activities that vigorously use the forearms, wrists or hands get tennis elbow. It is very common among professional sport players like tennis players and baseball players.

People who work in certain professions are also more prone to tennis elbow like auto mechanics, chefs, carpenters, cleaners, and plumbers. It is quite commonly seen among dentists and musicians also.

Tennis Elbow

What's the difference between tennis elbow and golfer's elbow?

Tennis elbow is a painful inflammatory condition of the outer part of the elbow. Golfer's elbow is a painful condition of the inside or inner part of the elbow which is known as medial epicondylitis. It is commonly seen in golf players.

People with golfer's elbow have inner elbow pain that radiates down the arm. They can also have finger numbness and tingling.

But Golfers can also get tennis elbow, just as tennis players may get golfer's elbow.

Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

Symptoms tend to come on slowly and pain may get worse over weeks and months.

  • Painful outer elbow with pain that radiates to the wrist which may get worse at night. It increases in intensity when any action of twisting or turning the forearm is done like turning a doorknob or opening a jar or lifting heavyweight. Stiffness is present when forearm is extended or straightened.
  • Swollen elbow joint
  • Weak hand grip

Diagnosis of Tennis Elbow

A physical examination will diagnose tennis elbow. A acutely painful point on the outer aspect of the elbow which increases with twisting and turning movement of the forearm is quite diagnostic. Few investigations are done-

  1. X ray is done to rule out other conditions like arthritis or a fracture.
  2. Ultrasonography, MRI or CT scan to assess tendon and muscle damage near the elbow joint.

Treatment of Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow is a very painful condition and it requires treatment as early as possible. It may get better on its own, however, recovery may take up to 18 months. If no timely treatment is taken, chances of tennis elbow turning into a chronic elbow joint pain is higher. Proven nonsurgical techniques exists which can benefit the condition of tennis elbow:

  • Proper Rest for several weeks to give time to tendon to heal. Don't push through pain. Pain is your body's way of talking to us, and we need to listen. Pushing through pain can lead to damage to our tendon and potential tearing.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) decreases pain and inflammation.
  • Wearing Braces which is a removable support brace called a counterforce brace. It takes tension off of tendons and muscles.
  • Ultrasound or other muscle-stimulating techniques may help to reduce pain and improve function
  • Physical therapy exercises can strengthen forearm muscles and your grip.
  • Injectable corticosteroids temporarily relieve joint pain and inflammation.
  • Avoid activities which increase the pain or inflammation

Approximately 95% of people with tennis elbow get better with nonsurgical treatments. Afterward, they can resume activities. It may take six to 12 months for symptoms to go away.

If symptoms don't improve after six to 12 months of nonsurgical treatment, then surgery is indicated which is done under brachial block or general anaesthesia. Open debridement of the tendon is the surgical procedure done for tennis elbow. Surgery typically involves removing the injured tendon and muscle. Recovery can take four to six months.
