Some people are born with moles/nevus. Other moles appear later in life. Sun exposure seems to play a role in the development of moles and may even play a role in the development of atypical, or dysplastic, moles.
Moles are frequently removed for a variety of reasons, the most common being cosmetic ones. They can be removed by either radiofrequency / laser treatment or by surgery. The surgical methods used are excision (cutting), with or without stitches; and shave removal using a scalpel blade without stitches. Although laser excision has been tried for moles, it is not the method of choice for most deep moles because the laser light doesn't penetrate deeply enough, and there is no tissue remaining to examine pathologically.
Cysts are also present in different areas of the body. They can be sebaceous, dermoid etc. They can be removed only surgically.
Lipoma, collection of fat cells in different areas of the body can be targeted by liposuction or by surgical excision.
Warts are small rough and hard bumps varying from the size of a pinhead to a pea. They develop as a result of skin infection by HPV virus. They can be surgically removed or by laser/radio frequency treatment.
The surgery is done routinely under local anesthesia. The best choice will be recommended to you by Dr. Amit Agarwal
Dr. Amit Agarwal shaves off small mole/nevus/warts - flush or slightly below the level of the skin with a radio frequency cautery or a scalpel. The wound is then covered with a bandage, and he will give you instructions on how to take care of your wound. You are usually able to leave the office shortly after.
Larger moles/nevus, cysts and lipomas are removed by excision (cutting) with sutures usually. If moles or nevus or warts are large or when they are present in cosmetically sensitive areas where an optimal scar is desired, then surgery will give better result than laser or radio frequency treatments Dr Amit Agarwal maps out the lesion, cleans the area, and numbs it. Then a scalpel is used to cut the mole/nevus and a border surrounding it. Size of the border depends on the concern whether the mole could be precancerous or cancerous, a larger border will be removed to ensure that the cancer itself is completely excised. Stitches are placed either deep (these are absorbed by the body and do not have to be removed) or on the upper surface of the skin (these don't absorb and will be removed later) to give you a better scar.
Cysts, Lipomas are excised by incising just over them (Dr Amit Agarwal uses very small incisions for even large lesions), creating a plane between normal skin and the cyst or lipoma, dissecting all around and removing them with minimum or no spillage of their contents in the area. Stitches are placed either deep (these are absorbed by the body and do not have to be removed) or on the upper surface of the skin (these don't absorb and will be removed later) to give you a better scar.
The specimen removed is then sent for pathological examination for definitive diagnosis.
You will be sent home immediately after surgery. There is no downtime and can start your routine work the very next day. Healing time after a mole/ nevus/ cyst, lipoma/wart removal depends on the individual. Young people tend to heal faster than older adults. And, not surprisingly, a larger incision will take longer to heal up than a smaller one. In general, expect a mole removal scar to take at least two to three weeks to heal.
Some methods to reduce scars should be started once the wound is healed. But initial care for the wound is essential for preventing infection and giving your skin the best chance for minimal scar formation. Taking steps to avoid a noticeable scar, or at least reduce the size of a scar, may be done with a variety of treatments and preventive measures.
