Aging process is not limited to face, breasts, or torso only but is visible on every part of the body with increasing age. The hands are also affected by it. Skin quality of hand deteriorates with age, pigmentation of skin increases, skin becomes flaccid with visible veins and tendons on the dorsum of hand, with significant loss of subcutaneous fat.
Fat grafting is done for hand rejuvenation in patients who want to improve the aesthetics of their hands; however, some patients require treatment for necessary reconstruction after suffering trauma/burns to hands. Fat grafting in hand has two effects: fills the dorsum of hand and rejuvenates the hand. Fat covers visible veins and tendons, resulting in uniform contours of hand, like a youthful hand. Further more, fat cells have a beneficial effect on deep and superficial skin tissue, thereby rejuvenating the hand.
Fat transfers use processed fat from the patient's own body to re-contour and smoothen the hands. The procedure also is known as micro fat injection. Fat cells are removed by liposuction from the donor area, usually from around the navel or from the thighs or buttocks using a small cannula attached to a syringe. The fat cells are cleansed and processed, and then injected into the wrinkled area using a blunt needle and syringe. Because there is a fairly high rate of re-absorption of the fat cells into the body, the surgeon will likely overfill the treated area.
After surgery, the treated area is covered with bandages. These bandages help in the compression of the skin and also reduce swelling giving you desired shape and improved contour. You can expect swelling immediately after the procedure, and that swelling can last anywhere between three and six weeks. You may also experience some discomfort. You will be instructed to maintain hand elevation for 2 to 3 weeks to avoid swelling. Gentle hand movements are allowed from day 1. You will be made to walk on the same day of the surgery. You will be discharged on the same day or next day of the surgery.
To help with healing, take a week or two off from your daily routine depending on your type of work. During that time, make sure to get plenty of rest, maintain hand elevation and avoid straining yourself physically or emotionally. You can use ice fomentation if the swelling is more.
At first you may be a little numb but as the swelling subsides, sensation will return.
