What are Dimples?

Dimples are the depressions in the cheeks that occur when some people smile. A dimple (also known as gelatin) is a small natural indentation, most notably on the chin or on the cheek. Some people may also have chin dimples. Many consider "dimples" as cute and lucky. Also, dimples help brighten a smile and add character to your personality. Only very few in the population are lucky enough to be born with natural dimples. However, thanks to dimple surgery anyone can get that coveted dimple now. A dimpleplasty is a type of plastic surgery procedure used to create dimples on the cheeks. This surgery can be entirely personalized. So, you can choose the location of the dimple on your face, depth, and shape.

  • How and where will you perform the surgery?
  • What are the risks and complications related to the surgery?
  • How long will be my recovery period?
  • How long do I have to stay at the centre?

What are the Preparations to be done for the surgery?

  • You should be physically healthy
  • Consumption of Herbal supplements and anti-inflammatory drugs should be avoided as they can increase bleeding.
  • Stop smoking at least two weeks prior to the surgery.
  • Get the tests done which are prescribed by Dr Amit Agarwal.
  • Admission will be done on the same day at the centre
  • Written consent form will be signed explaining the procedure after the admission.
  • Meeting with the anaesthetist for Pre-Anaesthesia Check-up (PAC) before surgery if planning is to do the surgery under General Anaesthesia.
  • Nil by mouth at least 4 to 5 hrs before the planned surgery.

What does the Dimple creation procedure include?

  • First step is to opt between general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia. Best choice will be recommended and discussed with you by Dr Amit Agarwal.
  • In the second step, painless incision is made inside your cheek and a tiny piece of the cheek muscle is removed. No incision is made on the outside of the skin.
  • Once Dr Amit Agarwal creates a space for the future dimple, he then positions a small absorbable suture (sling) through the inside of the cheek by catching under surface of the skin and securing it to the deeper soft tissues of the cheek. When the suture is tied, it causes a dimple in the overlying skin.
  • The inside of the cheek is then closed with one or two absorbable stitches.
  • Fourth step includes checking the results after the surgery. At first, there is a dimple present even without smiling, but after some days the dimple is only present while smiling or moving the face.

What is the Recovery after the surgery?

Recovery from dimpleplasty is relatively straightforward. You don't need to stay at the center. You can usually go home immediately after the surgery if it is done under local anesthesia. Soon after the procedure, you might experience mild swelling. You can apply cold packs to reduce swelling, but they will usually go away on their own within a few days. Most people can return to work, college, and other regular activities two days after having a dimpleplasty.

  • Mild irritation or pain may last for a week or two.
  • You will be encouraged to take soft diet for next few days to avoid discomfort.
  • Antiseptic gargling should be done thrice a day
  • The sutures are inside your cheeks which are self-dissolvable and do not need removal.

There will be some specific instructions given to you by Dr Amit Agarwal which includes

  • How to take care of the surgical site.
  • About the follow up dates.
  • How to take the medications. There are not many medications though.

What are the Risks and Complications post-surgery?

The complications and aftermaths of the surgery vary from person to person and their physical well-being. Dimple creation usually gives desired results but there can be some risks involved which include:

  • Risks related to general anaesthesia which is very rare. General Anaesthesia is very safe in present times and with best machines and a qualified anaesthetist, chances of encountering any complication is less than 0.1 percent in a healthy individual. But no one can predict who will land up in complication. We at Kayakriti Plastic Surgery and Dental Centre are equipped with world class anaesthesia workstation, other equipments and two very qualified intensivists for the surgical procedures to be very safe and smooth.
  • Chances of infection are minimum if proper instructions are followed and gargling is done.
  • There can be swelling orlittle bruising of the cheek region which reduces with time.
  • If you have a poor blood supply, the healing will be poor (more common in case of smokers, diabetes, in people with multiple diseases).
  • Sometimes change in skin sensation is noticed over cheek region which recovers with time.

These are the risks and possible complications which should be discussed with you by Dr. Amit Agarwal before the procedure. The total benefits of dimple creation will be seen after the swelling and bruising subsides.

What are the Do's and Don'ts for dimple creation surgery?

  1. You should not get into surgery if you are having any major chronic illness and should not hide it with Dr Amit Agarwal.
  2. You should consult Dr Amit Agarwal immediately if you have any complication.
